Mixed Number to Decimal Converter
Updated: June 2026
A mixed number pairs a whole number with a fraction, like 2 3/4. Converting it to a decimal is a two-part job that you can do in your head once you know the common fractions: handle the whole number and the fraction separately, then add them back together.

The two-step method
First convert the fractional part to a decimal by dividing its numerator by its denominator. Then add the whole number on the left.
3 ÷ 4 = 0.75
2 + 0.75 = 2.75
The whole number never changes; it simply sits in front of the decimal point. All the real work is the small division of the fraction part.
The improper-fraction route
Some people prefer to fold the whole number into the fraction first, creating an improper fraction, then divide once.
11 ÷ 4 = 2.75
Multiply the whole number by the denominator, add the numerator, and keep the same denominator. Both routes give 2.75; pick whichever feels more natural.
When the fraction repeats
If the fraction part does not terminate, the decimal repeats after the whole number.
2 5/6 → 5/6 = 0.8(3) → 2.8(3)
For everyday use you round, so 1 1/3 ≈ 1.33 and 2 5/6 ≈ 2.83, but the exact values keep their repeating tails.
Quick reference
| Mixed number | Decimal |
|---|---|
| 1 1/2 | 1.5 |
| 1 1/4 | 1.25 |
| 1 3/4 | 1.75 |
| 2 1/2 | 2.5 |
| 2 3/4 | 2.75 |
| 1 1/3 | 1.(3) |
| 3 5/8 | 3.625 |
Because the whole part is unchanged, you only ever need to remember the decimals of the common fractions — halves, quarters, eighths, thirds — and read the whole number straight off.
Where this comes up
Mixed numbers turn up constantly in cooking (1 1/2 cups), construction and woodworking (2 3/8 inches), and time (1 1/4 hours). A spreadsheet or a power tool's display wants a decimal, so the conversion is a daily-life skill, not just a classroom one. Knowing that 1 1/4 hours is 1.25 hours, or that 2 3/8 inches is 2.375 inches, lets you type the value straight into a calculator without fumbling.
