Convert PST to EST — Pacific to Eastern Time

Updated: May 2026

Pacific Standard Time (PST, UTC-8) is always exactly 3 hours behind Eastern Standard Time (EST, UTC-5). Unlike transatlantic conversions, the gap between US time zones never changes because both coasts observe Daylight Saving Time on the same dates. This page covers the complete conversion table, the only edge cases worth knowing, and the best scheduling windows for cross-coast teams.

PST and EST: the constant 3-hour gap

The four contiguous US time zones (Eastern, Central, Mountain, Pacific) are each separated by exactly one hour. Pacific is always 3 hours behind Eastern. When the US switches to Daylight Saving Time, all four zones shift simultaneously — PST becomes PDT (UTC-7) and EST becomes EDT (UTC-4) — so the 3-hour difference is preserved.

This makes US domestic conversion simpler than international conversion. You never need to check the calendar to know the offset: add 3 hours to go from Pacific to Eastern, subtract 3 hours to go from Eastern to Pacific.

The states of Arizona and Hawaii do not observe DST. Arizona stays on MST (UTC-7) year-round, which means it is sometimes 2 hours behind EST and sometimes 3 hours behind EDT. Hawaii (HST, UTC-10) is always 5 hours behind EST and 6 hours behind EDT.

Best meeting times across US coasts

With a 3-hour difference, scheduling a meeting that works well for both Los Angeles and New York requires care. A 5 PM end-of-day call in New York is only 2 PM in San Francisco — acceptable. But a 9 AM standup in New York is 6 AM in Los Angeles — too early to be practical.

  • Ideal window: 12 PM–2 PM EST / 9 AM–11 AM PST. Morning for the West Coast, after lunch for the East Coast.
  • Acceptable: 11 AM–4 PM EST / 8 AM–1 PM PST. Both within normal business hours.
  • Avoid: Before 11 AM EST (before 8 AM PST) or after 6 PM EST (after 3 PM PST for a synchronous call).

For asynchronous work, teams often adopt a policy where the West Coast posts updates by noon PST (3 PM EST), giving the East Coast enough time to respond before end of day. The West Coast then sees the responses first thing the following morning.

US time zone abbreviations explained

The US uses paired abbreviations: the standard time name and the daylight time name. Knowing both prevents confusion in written communication.

  • Eastern: EST (UTC-5) in winter, EDT (UTC-4) in summer. New York, Washington DC, Boston, Miami, Detroit.
  • Central: CST (UTC-6) in winter, CDT (UTC-5) in summer. Chicago, Dallas, Minneapolis, New Orleans.
  • Mountain: MST (UTC-7) in winter, MDT (UTC-6) in summer. Denver, Salt Lake City, Phoenix (MST year-round).
  • Pacific: PST (UTC-8) in winter, PDT (UTC-7) in summer. Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Las Vegas.

When someone writes "3 PM PT", they mean Pacific Time without specifying standard or daylight. PT is always 3 hours behind ET (Eastern Time). Use the unpaired abbreviations (ET, CT, MT, PT) when you do not need to specify which half of the year applies.

Frequently asked questions

How many hours is PST behind EST?

PST (UTC-8) is exactly 3 hours behind EST (UTC-5). During DST, both zones shift to PDT (UTC-7) and EDT (UTC-4), keeping the same 3-hour gap. The difference is constant year-round.

What is 9 AM PST in EST?

9:00 AM PST equals 12:00 PM (noon) EST. Add 3 hours to convert from Pacific to Eastern time. This rule applies equally to PDT to EDT during summer.

What is the best time to schedule a meeting between San Francisco and New York?

The ideal window is 12 PM–2 PM EST (9 AM–11 AM PST). This lands in the morning for San Francisco and just after lunch for New York, giving both parties productive meeting conditions.

Does the PST–EST gap ever change?

In practice, no — both coasts change clocks on the same dates. The only exception is Arizona, which stays on MST year-round, making it sometimes 2 hours and sometimes 3 hours behind Eastern Time.
