Military Time to Standard Time — 24-Hour to 12-Hour Conversion Chart

Updated: May 2026

Military time, also called the 24-hour clock, runs from 0000 (midnight) to 2359 (one minute before midnight). It eliminates the AM/PM ambiguity of the 12-hour format by giving every hour of the day a unique four-digit number. The conversion rule is simple: hours below 1200 are AM (just drop any leading zero), and hours 1200 and above are PM (subtract 12 to get the PM hour). Noon is always 1200; midnight is always 0000.

How to convert military time: the two rules

The conversion is mechanical and takes under two seconds once memorized:

  • 0000–1159 (midnight to 11:59 AM): These are AM hours. Drop the leading zero if present. 0000 = 12:00 AM (midnight). 0001 = 12:01 AM. 0100 = 1:00 AM. 0930 = 9:30 AM. 1100 = 11:00 AM. 1159 = 11:59 AM.
  • 1200–2359 (noon to 11:59 PM): These are PM hours. 1200 = 12:00 PM (noon). For 1300 and above, subtract 12: 1300 − 12 = 1:00 PM. 1500 − 12 = 3:00 PM. 1800 − 12 = 6:00 PM. 2300 − 12 = 11:00 PM. 2359 = 11:59 PM.

The only counterintuitive pair is midnight / noon: 0000 is midnight (12:00 AM) and 1200 is noon (12:00 PM). Both use "12" in 12-hour format, but 0000 and 1200 in 24-hour format. Remember: 0 = night (midnight), 12 = middle of day (noon).

Who uses military / 24-hour time?

The 24-hour format is the global standard for aviation, maritime navigation, medicine, military operations, logistics, and most scientific applications. It eliminates the possibility of a 12-hour misread — an 11 AM vs 11 PM confusion that in medicine or aviation could have serious consequences.

  • Global standard: ISO 8601, the international standard for date and time representation, uses 24-hour format: 2026-06-12T14:30:00.
  • Europe and most of the world: 24-hour format is the everyday standard. Train schedules, TV listings, and work hours are all written in 24-hour time.
  • US, Canada, Australia (informal): The 12-hour format dominates in everyday speech and consumer products, but 24-hour time is used in healthcare, aviation, the military, and many professional contexts.
  • Aviation (ZULU time): All international aviation uses UTC expressed in 24-hour format, called "Zulu time" (Z suffix). A 1400Z departure means 2:00 PM UTC, regardless of the local time zone at origin or destination.

The 24-hour format is unambiguous for scheduling and logging but can be disorienting for people accustomed to the 12-hour format. Our time zone converter offers a 12h/24h toggle so you can use whichever format you prefer.
